How have we been?
Hope We have been enjoying our isolation period? And if it’s your first time, I’m so glad to have you here!
I remember a while ago, during my days as an undergraduate, I totally loved this particular song by Beyonce titled “PRETTY HURTS”. My love for it stemmed majorly from the lyrics, especially the second verse that says:
“Blonder hair, flat chest
TV says bigger is better
South beach, Sugar free
Vogue says thinner is better”
The subject of body image and insecurities is not new to most of us. We have all gotten our fair share at one time or the other.
We are always constantly told how we should look like, how our bodies should be in terms of shape and size, what would be most attractive to the opposite sex, what will make us the center of attraction and the hottest girl and boy in the block that we become almost ashamed of our selves when we lack these seemingly perfect world definition of “beauty”
One day, while I was dressing up, my roommate suddenly says “Babe, you’ve got HIP-DIPS”. I had never heard of it before and I had never even assumed anything was wrong with my hips. I just thought I wasn’t overly curved and that was totally fine. She then she went ahead to explain to me when it became obvious I had no clue what it meant.
Still, I wasn’t bothered because, guys, it’s my SKELETON!
To my utmost surprise, after a couple of days, I logged into Twitter and saw a thread dedicated to the almighty “HIP-DIP” 😂. I was so surprised and became assured it was actually a thing, you know?
So I started reading the thread and realized that people actually have lower perceptions of themselves because of their hip-dips. Many wished they could do something to take it away or make it better and a lot of people even shared pictures.
Now before I bore you with my stories, it’s just so obvious that body insecurities are a Big deal (No pun intended, lol) and they should be dealt with. Now, it could range from the most obvious thing to silliest of things (how our smallest toe-nail looks).
I mean, some things are totally dependent on our skeleton, our body frames, our genes which are primarily hereditary. Our uniqueness is in our diversity, we can’t all look the same and we’ve got to own that!
And, I am here to say it all my chest that no “body” is better than the other, we’ve got to have a paradigm shift about these areas of our lives too. The vibe you give out to others about your body is what they would catch/receive and give back to you because trust me, the root of wanting to look a certain way is the need for “ACCEPTANCE/VALIDATION”
I hear and see a lot of people say things like “I used to hate my forehead and all that, until I saw Rihanna rocking hers effortlessly”. So all of sudden, it makes sense to love your forehead because Rihanna has got it and owns it and therefore looks amazing with it.
As God’s people, we need to really MEDITATE on what it means to be created in God’s image and also what it implies when God finished and inspected all that he created and said “this is GOOD”. Even when we humans finish a project that was done well, we are proud of ourselves, we feel great and expect others to appreciate it as well, how much more our Almighty God?
We have to know who/whose we are, we can’t afford to be tossed up and down by every wind of doctrine (influence, trends, vogue etc.)
Looking good is very important, In fact, I am a Brand Ambassador and so it’s my favorite thing to do but our WHY is important. If you need to make some adjustments like losing weights or adding some pounds, building your muscles, treating your skin, or even learning personal make-over, please by all means DO, but when it comes to things we literally have no control over, please allow it.
99.9% of the time, we are more gorgeous than we think or probably know and we worry about things only we ourselves can even see and then, we compare a whole loooottttt
We were uniquely made by God and not we ourselves so let’s drop the obsession already.
You are amazing, gorgeous and a BOSS
You are YOU, that’s your SUPER POWER
